The Dental Care Reform 2026: How It Works at Luxadent

Starting in 2026, a new dental care reform will be introduced in Sweden, called the dental care reform. It is designed to make dental care more financially secure for those who are 67 years or older. In short, the reform means you only pay ten percent of the cost for certain treatments, while the government covers the rest.

At Luxadent in Malmö, Helsingborg, and Ystad, we help you understand what the dental care reform means in practice, how to use the support, and how to plan your dental care in a smart way that suits your finances and health.

What is the dental care reform?

The dental care reform is an enhanced high-cost protection for dental care for elderly patients. The name comes from the fact that those covered by the reform only pay about 10 percent of the reference price for included treatments. The remaining 90 percent is paid by the government.

The purpose of the dental care reform is to:

  • make it easier for the elderly to afford necessary dental care

  • increase the possibility of regular check-ups

  • reduce the risk of delaying treatments due to cost

The reform is part of a larger dental care regime for the elderly, where dental care protection should resemble that already present in other health care.

Who is covered by the dental care reform?

The dental care reform applies to those who:

  • turn 67 years or more during the year the reform is introduced (2026)

  • or have already turned 67 years old by 2026

It is the age that governs, not whether you are retired or still working.

Generally, you need to:

  • be registered in Sweden

  • go to a dental clinic connected to the Social Insurance Office

Luxadent is connected, which means you can use the dental care reform with us according to the rules that apply to the support.

What is included in the dental care reform?

The dental care reform mainly covers necessary and therapeutic dental care, such as:

  • fillings

  • root canal treatments

  • treatment for toothache or infections

  • certain prosthetic measures, such as crowns, bridges, and dentures when needed for medical reasons

You then pay about 10 percent of the reference price, making larger treatments significantly more affordable compared to before.

Exactly what is included may vary slightly depending on the decisions made when implementing the reform, but the fundamental idea is clear: more protection for elderly patients with greater treatment needs. Talk to your dentist at Luxadent for the latest information on what is included.

What is not included in the dental care reform?

Not all dental care will be covered by the dental care reform. For example:

  • examinations and certain preventive dental care (like tartar removal) are not directly covered

  • more cosmetically oriented requests, such as specific materials or aesthetic solutions, are usually not included

For such visits, you can still use the regular general dental care allowance (ATB) and other parts of the dental care support.

At Luxadent, we help you see which part of your treatment is covered by the dental care reform and what goes through the regular high-cost protection, dental care allowance, or self-payment.

How the dental care reform interacts with other dental care support

When the dental care reform is introduced, it will interact with other existing support:

  • General dental care allowance (ATB) – an annual allowance that you can use for examinations and preventive care

  • Special dental care allowance (STB) – for certain medical conditions where the risk of poor oral health is higher

  • the regular high-cost protection for dental care

For those who are 67 plus, this means in practice:

  • a greater part of the cost for necessary treatment is covered by the government

  • better protection if you need extensive treatment in a short time

  • greater ability to plan dental care long-term without financial strain

When you come to Luxadent, we always review:

  1. What support you are entitled to

  2. How we can set up the treatment plan so you use the support wisely

  3. What your own cost will be before we start

Common questions about the dental care reform

When does the dental care reform take effect?
The reform is planned to be introduced on January 1, 2026. Some details may be refined until then, but the main principle is a 10 percent copayment for certain treatments for 67 plus.

Do I have to change dentists to receive dental care reform?
No, but you need to go to a clinic connected to the Social Insurance Office. Luxadent is connected.

Does the dental care reform cover all types of cosmetic dental care?
No. Cosmetic requests not medically justified are usually not covered. You pay for those parts yourself, but we always make a clear division so you know what is included and not.

Can I combine the dental care reform with other supports?
Yes. The dental care reform interacts with, for example, general dental care allowance and regular high-cost protection. We help you use the right support at the right time.
