Teeth Whitening – At Home or at the Clinic?
Teeth whitening is an effective treatment for brightening your teeth and achieving a fresher smile. Discolorations can be caused by coffee, tea, wine, snus, smoking, or naturally darker enamel. Some discolorations are superficial and can be removed with teeth cleaning, while deeper discolorations require whitening.
What Causes Discolored Teeth?
Discolorations can be caused by:
Coffee, tea, and red wine
Snus and smoking
Aging (the enamel becomes thinner)
Medications or fluoride stains
Worn down or porous teeth
Superficial stains often disappear with a professional teeth cleaning at a dental hygienist, but deeper discolorations require teeth whitening to make the teeth whiter.
Clinic Whitening – Fastest Results
Clinic whitening is performed by a dentist or dental hygienist, NOTE that currently we only offer clinic whitening in Malmö.
The visit takes approximately 60–90 minutes and you'll see visible results the same day.
Advantages:
Immediate results
Performed under professional supervision
Strong, proven whitening agents are used
Teeth Whitening at Home – Just as Effective, but Gradual
“Teeth whitening at home” is currently the most popular option — but there is a big difference between home whitening from a store and home whitening from a dental clinic.
At Luxadent, it is done like this:
We take an impression of your teeth
You receive individually customized whitening trays, shaped exactly according to your teeth
You whiten at home with professional whitening gel, either during the day or night
Results are usually visible after 1–2 weeks.
The difference compared to “home teeth whitening from a store”:
Alternative | Effect | Safety | Risk of Sensitivity |
Teeth whitening at home purchased online or in-store | Small results, short-lived | Unregulated | Higher risk (uneven dosage) |
Teeth whitening at home via dentist (Luxadent) | Very good results | Safe and controlled | Low – individual trays protect the gums |
Clinic whitening | Immediate results | Maximum safety | Low – performed by clinic |

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?
Yes, when done with the correct strength and by a dentist.
Before whitening, we check:
Cavity
Gum inflammation
Cracks in enamel
We never whiten teeth with untreated issues.
People with sensitive teeth may experience mild sensitivity during the treatment. It is recommended to use desensitizing toothpaste or mouthwash. The strength of the whitening can always be adjusted.
How Long Does the Result Last?
The result can last 1–3 years, depending on:
Food and drink habits (coffee, tea, snus)
Oral hygiene
If you use retainer or whitening tray for maintenance
Many supplement with maintenance whitening 1–2 times a year to retain the white tone.
Who Is Suitable for Teeth Whitening?
You are suitable for teeth whitening if you:
Have healthy teeth and gums
Want to lighten discolorations
Want a fresher and brighter smile
We do not whiten teeth if:
Active cavities
Current inflammation in gums
Uncertain pregnancy or breastfeeding (recommended to wait)
