Gum disease

What is periodontitis?

The first stage of gum disease is gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums that causes bleeding gums.
If gingivitis is not treated, it develops into periodontitis, where bacteria accumulate in the gum pockets and begin to break down the bone that holds the tooth in place.

Typical signs of gum disease are:

  • Bleeding gums

  • Bad breath

  • Loose teeth

  • Teeth that appear longer (due to receding gums)

  • Discomfort when chewing

Causes of gum disease

Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease, meaning several factors often work together:

  • Genetic predisposition

  • Smoking

  • Inadequate oral hygiene

  • Certain medications (especially those that cause dry mouth)

  • Stress or unhealthy lifestyle

The combination of heredity, smoking, and poor oral care significantly increases the risk of developing the disease.

How is gum disease treated?

The goal of treatment is to stop the breakdown of tissue and bone and to remove the bacteria that cause inflammation.

Treatment at Luxadent is performed by a dental hygienist and consists of several steps:

  1. Anamnesis and analysis: We identify the cause of the problem and measure the depth of the gum pockets.

  2. Thorough cleaning: Bacteria and tartar are removed below the gum line using special instruments and ultrasound.

  3. Individual treatment plan: You will receive instructions on improved oral hygiene and advice on lifestyle factors such as smoking.

  4. Supportive treatment: Regular follow-up visits are planned to ensure the disease does not recur.

In some cases, the dental hygienist collaborates with a dentist to ensure a complete treatment outcome.
